Canadian Woman Arrested at Lagos Airport for Trafficking Synthetic Cannabis

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju

at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. She was arrested for attempting to import a large consignment of ‘Canadian Loud,’ a potent strain of synthetic cannabis.

Munju was caught during the clearance of passengers on a KLM flight from Canada on Thursday, October 3, 2024. In a joint examination of her three bags, NDLEA officials discovered 74 parcels of the illicit substance, weighing 35.20 kilograms, hidden in two of her bags. According to the agency, this was her first trip to Nigeria.

The suspect admitted to being recruited online to traffic the drugs in exchange for 10,000 Canadian dollars. She claimed that she accepted the offer to help finance her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada.

In a related development, NDLEA operatives intercepted a massive consignment of opioids and codeine-based cough syrups at Port Harcourt Ports, Onne, Rivers State. The shipment, worth over ₦9 billion in street value, consisted of 13,298,000 pills of opioids and 338,253 bottles of cough syrup. It was recovered from three containers arriving from India during a joint examination on October 2 and 3, 2024.

The NDLEA also uncovered another shipment of 50 kilograms of Canadian Loud concealed in a container with imported vehicles at the Tincan Seaport in Lagos. The consignment had initially cleared customs but was tracked down based on intelligence. A suspect, Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim, has been arrested.

Elsewhere, NDLEA officers in Taraba and Lagos intercepted various drugs including opioids, cannabis, and skuchies, leading to several arrests.
