The Ondo State Government has expressed sympathy to the Osemawe of Ondo and the people of Ondo Kingdom following a flash flood that affected several parts of the community on Friday. In response, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has ordered the evacuation of the affected areas and directed the state’s rapid response team to prevent further damage.
In a statement released by the State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Oyeniyi Oseni, the government confirmed that preventive measures had already been initiated, following warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET). “Amphibious excavators have been deployed to critical erosion-prone areas for dredging,” Oseni stated. He explained that this machinery had been operational in Ondo Kingdom for two weeks, particularly in Laje and Oke-Odunwo.

According to Oseni, dredging activities were also conducted in other parts of the state, including Akure, Igbokoda, and Ore. However, urgent attention will now be focused on dredging canals along Captain Cook up to the sawmill area of Ondo.
“The cause of the flooding can also be linked to developments along waterways in an Estate at Fagun and Ife Road,” Oseni revealed. He emphasized that the Ministry of Environment will collaborate with relevant authorities to address these unlawful developments. “We assure the Kabiyesi and the people of Ondo that the government will not relent until the issue is fully resolved,” he added.
