The Federal Government on Thursday revealed plans for a 63-kilometre section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to be constructed within Ondo State, as part of a larger infrastructure development. The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, at a town hall meeting with stakeholders held at the Government House in Akure.
Umahi emphasized that the project, a central part of Nigeria’s coastal infrastructure initiative, is set to bolster socio-economic growth across the region. “This project is not about politics; it’s a genuine investment in the welfare and future of our people,” Umahi said. He also praised Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his dedication to making the coastal highway a reality in Ondo State, noting that collaboration with the state government would be essential to achieving timely progress.
The Minister stressed the project’s alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision, highlighting the administration’s commitment to nationwide development. “President Tinubu is dedicated to projects that benefit Nigerians across all regions,” he added.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, in his remarks, expressed his gratitude for the federal government’s engagement with local stakeholders and lauded the project’s anticipated impact on Ondo State. “This expansive highway will connect multiple states, enhancing connectivity between Nigeria’s western and southeastern regions and fostering economic growth,” Aiyedatiwa noted. He assured attendees that the project would not be abandoned and pledged rigorous oversight to ensure quality and timely delivery.
“This will not be one of those projects that get abandoned. This road will bring tremendous benefits to the people of Ondo State, and we are fully committed to partnering with the Federal Government to make it a reality,” the Governor stated.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also mentioned a partnership with the Federal Government on restoration projects in Aiyetoro, Ilaje, underlining the state’s commitment to coastal protection.
Goodwill messages were delivered by prominent figures, including Senator Niyi Adegbonmire, SAN; Akin Alabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Works; and Banji Okunomo, former Chairman of Ilaje Local Government, who represented the coastal communities of Ondo State. They commended the project for its anticipated contributions to regional growth and connectivity.
