he Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in partnership with global ferry industry association Interferry, has commenced the practical phase of its Ferry Safety Development Programme (FSDP), aimed at improving safety standards and technical expertise across the state’s waterways sector.
The first in-person training session was held at the Caverton Marine Ferry Building Facility in Badore, Ajah, bringing together 50 participants for hands-on learning in ferry design, vessel construction, maintenance, safety standards and operational best practices.
The training, coordinated by Engr. Ukeme Sunday, marks a significant step in the 18-month programme, which combines virtual mentoring, self-paced learning and practical industry exposure to build capacity within Nigeria’s inland waterways sector.
A major highlight of the session was a technical workshop led by Caverton Marine’s General Manager, Mohammed Ibrahim, who shared insights drawn from more than 40 years of experience in ferry design and construction. He guided participants through key aspects of vessel construction standards, maintenance procedures and safety requirements critical to ferry operations.
Speaking during the programme, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the practical training component was designed to complement the programme’s online learning modules by exposing participants to real-world operational environments.
He noted that hands-on experience and direct interaction with industry professionals are essential for developing the competencies needed to improve safety, efficiency and professionalism within the waterways transport sector.
LASWA thanked Interferry for sponsoring the initiative and Caverton Marine for hosting the inaugural practical session, while also acknowledging the Lagos State Government’s continued support for maritime safety and the development of the state’s blue economy.
The Ferry Safety Development Programme, described as Africa’s first of its kind, seeks to strengthen technical competence, promote operational excellence and foster a stronger safety culture among ferry operators and other stakeholders across the inland waterways industry.
