The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mohamed Buba Marwa, has commended the National Assembly for its unwavering support in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. He also appealed for continued assistance to strengthen the agency’s capacity and operational efficiency.
Marwa made these remarks during the 2025 budget defense sessions before the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs and the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics on January 13 and 14, 2025.
“I wish to first appreciate the honorable chairman, the deputy chairman, and distinguished members of this esteemed committee for your invaluable and consistent support throughout the 2024 fiscal year,” Marwa said. “Your effort towards the amendment of the NDLEA Act is highly appreciated. I respectfully ask your good offices to continue assisting us in our critical needs during the appropriation process.”

Highlighting the agency’s challenges, Marwa emphasized the urgent need for barracks to ensure the safety and welfare of NDLEA personnel.
“Our commands across the federation face significant challenges, particularly lack of accommodation. The barracks project is critical to the operational efficiency and success of NDLEA. Proper accommodation will enhance staff morale, ensure security, and strengthen the agency’s capacity to execute its mandate,” he added.
The 2025 budget proposal allocates ₦67.5 billion to the NDLEA, with ₦47.1 billion for recurrent personnel costs, ₦3.38 billion for overhead, and ₦16.97 billion for capital expenditure. However, Marwa noted that the capital expenditure allocation excludes funding for ongoing barracks projects.

“The agency faces growing challenges, including sophisticated drug cartels, drug abuse, and inadequate infrastructure. To address these, we are constructing barracks to improve operational integrity and ensure security. Many commands currently operate from rented facilities, which are inadequate for effective administration,” Marwa explained.
House Committee Chairman on Narcotic Drugs, Hon. Abass Adigun, pledged continued support for the agency. “This committee recognizes the critical role the NDLEA plays in safeguarding our communities. We remain committed to ensuring that public funds are allocated efficiently to support the agency’s mandate,” he stated.
Senate Committee Chairman on Drugs and Narcotics, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, also commended the NDLEA’s performance. “We’re all witnesses to the good work you are doing, and we are proud of your performance. You can count on our support to ensure you function effectively,” he assured.
Marwa also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement and support. “With your support, we are confident in our ability to enhance our operations and fulfil our mandate of safeguarding the security of our nation,” he affirmed.
