The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has received a significant boost in its fight against illicit drug trafficking with the commissioning of a central exhibit office donated by the United States government. The facility, located at the NDLEA headquarters annexe in Ikoyi, Lagos, was handed over on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, by US Consulate General Ms. Jo Ellen Georg, supported by senior US officials.

Speaking at the event, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Buba Marwa emphasized the importance of international collaboration in addressing the challenges of drug-related crimes.

“Today, I am particularly pleased to acknowledge this generous gesture, which highlights the critical need for efficient and secure handling of evidence. This facility sets a new standard for accountability and transparency in drug law enforcement. It is an investment in the security and future of our nations,” Marwa stated.

He also shared the agency’s impressive achievements in 2024, including the seizure of over 2.6 million kilograms of illicit drugs, the arrest of 18,500 offenders, and the rehabilitation of over 8,200 individuals. Marwa reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to overcoming challenges, calling for sustained support from international partners.

“The challenges of illicit drugs are dynamic and multifaceted. We are pragmatic in seeking further support in areas such as capacity building, advanced technology, intelligence sharing, and operational logistics,” he said.

In her remarks, Ms Jo Ellen Georg highlighted the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the United States, commending the NDLEA’s progress under Marwa’s leadership.

“This donation underscores our shared commitment to countering crime, illegal drugs, and instability. The facility will provide a secure space for NDLEA officers to conduct investigations and process cases. It is the latest example of our robust cooperation, including the modernization of the NDLEA’s chemical forensic laboratory in Lagos,” Georg said.

She also lauded the historical ties between the two nations, referencing former US President Jimmy Carter’s state visit to Nigeria.

“Our joint efforts have disrupted drug trafficking networks, dismantled clandestine meth labs, and improved forensic capabilities. Together, we are building a safer, healthier world,” she added.
