In a determined effort to curb illegal bunkering and protect critical national assets, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division have intensified operations in the Niger Delta region, recording significant successes in the process. During a recent intelligence-led clearance operation at the fringes of the Imo River, a densely forested area known for illegal bunkering activities, troops successfully deactivated over 13 illegal refining sites. The area, located at the border between Abia and Rivers States, has long been a notorious hub for economic sabotage, largely concealed from aerial reconnaissance.
The operation, carried out by the 29 Battalion in collaboration with other security agencies, uncovered and destroyed massive dugouts, seven of which were filled with more than 250,000 litres of stolen crude oil. Additionally, over 10,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and other related products were discovered at the site.
In a separate operation, troops of the 2 Brigade, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted a Toyota bus carrying over 20 bags of suspected illegally refined AGO, estimated to be over 1,000 litres. The bus, with registration number UYY 962 MJ, was stopped at Abeapo Community along the Onna-Eket road in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Three suspects connected to the illegal transportation were arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation.
Commenting on the success of these operations, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, praised the troops for their efforts and issued a stern warning to those involved in illegal activities. “The criminal elements in the region must embrace legitimate means of livelihood or be prepared to face the full wrath of the law,” Major General Abdussalam stated. He further urged them to refrain from acts that sabotage critical national infrastructures and assets.
