Premier League Launches Social Media Account to Clarify VAR Decisions

In an effort to minimize controversies surrounding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, the Premier League has launched a new social media account dedicated to explaining VAR decisions on matchdays for the 2024/25 season.

The Premier League aims to reduce frustration with the VAR system, following complaints from clubs like Wolves, Newcastle, Arsenal, and Liverpool over controversial decisions that impacted match results.

These clubs had called for the system to be scrapped at the end of the 2023/24 season. However, only Wolves voted for its removal, while the remaining 19 clubs requested improvements, citing issues like delays in decisions and irreversible incorrect calls.

To address these concerns, the Premier League launched the @PLMatchCenter account on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

According to the account’s first post, “This page will provide live updates from Stockley Park, including information directly from the VAR Hub. We will issue near-live updates on operational matters from all matches – including clarification on refereeing and VAR decisions.”

The 2024/25 Season is scheduled to kick off on the 16th of August.
