In a historic event marking 40 years of groundbreaking innovation, Prof. Abdoulaye Diabaté, a leading figure in the global fight against malaria, delivered a powerful TED Talk titled “How to End Malaria.” The talk, which was recorded in April during a private event in Vancouver, was released to the public on August 20, 2024, in alignment with World Mosquito Day.
Prof. Diabaté, who hails from Burkina Faso, serves as the Head of Medical Entomology and Parasitology at the Research Institute in Health Sciences (IRSS) in Bobo-Dioulasso. His work as the Principal Investigator of Target Malaria Burkina Faso has garnered worldwide acclaim, positioning him as a key voice in the fight against one of the deadliest diseases on the planet.
“I am humbled and equally energized to continue my mission to eliminate malaria in Africa. It’s a testament to the importance of our collective efforts to use human ingenuity to not only end malaria but also improve global health and build the next generations of African scientists,” Prof. Diabaté stated, reflecting on the growing global attention his work has received.
Malaria continues to claim over 600,000 lives each year and affects more than 200 million people, with African children and pregnant women being the most vulnerable.
In his TED2024 talk, Prof. Diabaté stressed the urgency of addressing this crisis and the need for African leadership in the fight against malaria. “Our approach is not just about technology; it’s about ensuring that African voices are central in the global fight against malaria. The future of this battle depends on the collaboration and empowerment of those most affected,” he emphasized.
The talk also underscored the innovative strategies being deployed by Target Malaria, particularly the use of gene drive technology, which has the potential to drastically reduce the population of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. “We are on the cusp of a transformative era in global health, where science and collaboration can finally end the scourge of malaria,” Prof. Diabaté noted.
Later this year, Prof. Diabaté will further share his vision in Netflix’s series “In What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates,” which explores the impact of advancements in technology, including efforts to eradicate diseases like malaria.
