In a surprising turn of weather events, Ibadan, located in Oyo State, southwest Nigeria, has encountered its inaugural rainfall of the year, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The unanticipated downpour occurred in the early hours of Thursday, January 4th, marking a significant meteorological event for the region. Contrary to early predictions of lightning, heavy winds, and thunderstorms, the rain, lasting approximately 40 minutes from 3:40 am to 4:20 am, was characterized by its peaceful descent.
Notable areas like Omi-Adio, in Ido Local Government Area, and Ibadan South West Local Government Area were among the locations where this refreshing rainfall was observed.
City residents expressed joy and considered it a “shower of blessing in the new year.” Mr. Paul Ademola, a resident of Omi Adio, highlighted the relief it brought from the evening heat and mild harmattan in the morning. Additionally, he emphasized the need for urgent attention to the construction of untarred roads exacerbating health issues in the community.
Meanwhile, in Lagos, Nigeria’s former capital and current commercial hub, the heat persisted for a significant part of the day, hinting at the likelihood of early rainfall in the new year. Lagos, being a coastal city, traditionally experiences rain sooner due to its proximity to the Atlantic.
With temperatures reaching as high as 34°C on Wednesday, the rain is anticipated to provide the much-needed respite for Lagosians. The contrast in weather patterns between Ibadan and Lagos sparks interest in the regional variations and meteorological dynamics unfolding at the beginning of 2024.
