Democracy at 25: Tinubu Celebrates, Honors Heroes of Nigeria’s Democratic Struggle

1 Mins read

President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation today, celebrating Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance on Democracy Day. In his speech, Tinubu highlighted the nation’s journey towards democracy, which began 31 years ago, and honored the sacrifices of those who fought for Nigeria’s democratic rights.

Tinubu acknowledged the difficult and dangerous path Nigerians endured during the six years following the June 12, 1993, presidential election. He paid tribute to key figures such as Chief MKO Abiola, his wife Kudirat, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and Pa Alfred Rewane, who lost their lives in the struggle for democracy.

The president also honored the memories of numerous other activists, including Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Abraham Adesanya, and Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, and praised those who endured exile, like General Alani Akinrinade and Professor Wole Soyinka. He recognized the efforts of domestic activists such as Olisa Agbakoba and Femi Falana, who kept the pressure on the military regime.

Tinubu emphasized the crucial role of Nigerian journalists and media establishments like The Punch and Guardian, who stood with pro-democracy activists despite facing severe repression. He noted that their combined efforts led to the fall of the military dictatorship in 1999, allowing Nigeria to emerge as the most populous democracy in Africa.

Reflecting on the importance of democracy, Tinubu stated that it is more than just periodic elections; it encompasses freedom, liberty, and the diversity of opinions. He stressed that democracy demands dialogue and respect for differing views, rather than force.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to preserving democracy, highlighting the need for economic reforms to create a stronger foundation for future growth. He promised to listen to the people and work towards fair economic opportunities, noting recent negotiations with organized labor for a new national minimum wage as an example of democratic principles in action.

Tinubu concluded by calling on Nigerians to continue supporting democracy, invoking the words of Franklin Roosevelt: “There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.” He urged the nation to move forward together, keeping the fire of democracy burning for future generations.

“May God bless Nigeria and preserve our democracy,” Tinubu said, wishing all Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day.
