In a move aimed at uplifting Ondo State’s most vulnerable groups, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has flagged off the disbursement of N1.4 billion under the ONDO-CARES social intervention program. The initiative, targeting unemployed youths, elderly citizens, and individuals facing economic hardship, was launched at a well-attended ceremony at St. James’ Mega Primary School, Iro, Akure, on Wednesday.
Speaking passionately about the project, Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted that the ONDO-CARES initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to fostering a more equitable society through impactful social investments. “Today marks a significant milestone in our quest to create a more compassionate and equitable society,” he stated. “This initiative embodies our commitment to social justice and human dignity. It is a strong demonstration of the willingness and commitment of the Ondo State Government, through the OD-CARES Programme, to uplift residents of the State, especially the poor, vulnerable youths, elderly, chronically ill, and physically challenged persons.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa outlined the program’s achievements, noting that the State’s Conditional Cash Transfer Unit (SCTU) has distributed over two billion Naira to over 7,500 beneficiaries. Currently, 2,870 residents receive bi-monthly stipends of N20,000, with plans underway to enroll an additional 5,000 beneficiaries to further extend the program’s reach.

In addition, the Labour-Intensive Public Works (LIPW) scheme has provided financial support to over 19,000 unemployed youths and vulnerable residents, injecting over two billion Naira into the state’s local economy. “An additional 1,000 beneficiaries will soon join this program to further combat youth unemployment and boost economic productivity,” the Governor noted.
Aiyedatiwa also acknowledged the federal government’s support, revealing that, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, 77,000 Ondo residents have benefited from a federal grant of N2 billion. Expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other stakeholders, the Governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to effectively deploy every resource in enhancing citizens’ welfare.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Investment Programme, Barrister Felix Alonge, praised the Governor’s commitment to reducing unemployment and fostering social inclusion. “This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reducing unemployment and fostering social inclusion,” Alonge said, adding that it aligns with the Governor’s vision of a prosperous Ondo State.
Orioye Gbayisemore, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Empowerment, noted that beneficiaries were selected from across all 18 local government areas, with payments beginning immediately.
One of the beneficiaries, Enuiyin Oluwafunmilayo, expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I am truly thankful to the state government for this lifeline. This fund will help me meet my essential needs and ease the financial burden I’ve been facing.”
