In a major step towards improving access to clean water in the Lake Chad region, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has commissioned a solar-powered borehole in Gouldjouwan, a community abokilometresmeters from Mora, Cameroon.

The facility, which features a 10-cubic-meter tank capacity, was inaugurated by MNJTF Force Commander Major General Goodwin Michael Mutkut in a ceremony attended by military commanders from Sector 1 Mora, MNJTF staff officers, and representatives from Defence Council International.

Speaking at the event, Major General Mutkut highlighted the essential role of clean water in sustaining human life and reiterated the MNJTF’s commitment to providing fundamental resources to communities in the Lake Chad region. He acknowledged the support of the European Union and its partners in making the project possible.

“The provision of this borehole is a testament to our collective efforts in enhancing the well-being of communities affected by conflict. We encourage the people of Gouldjouwan to manage this facility responsibly so that more communities can benefit from similar initiatives in the future,” he said.

The Acting Commander of Sector 1, Colonel Tiokap Pierre Loti, emphasized the collaboration between the military and civilians in achieving this milestone. He urged the community to maintain the facility and called on international partners to extend similar projects to other affected areas.

Brigadier General (retired) Stéphane Caiazzo of the Defence Council International, who facilitated the project, described the borehole as a state-of-the-art facility equipped with solar panels, microfilters, an automatic chrome dispenser, and a high-voltage pump to ensure an efficient and sustainable water supply. He noted that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to help internally displaced persons return to their ancestral homes following disruptions caused by Boko Haram insurgents.

Mr. Zake Bukar, representing the Mayor of Mora, expressed deep appreciation to the MNJTF for its continuous support in improving the quality of life for the people of Gouldjouwan.

The newly commissioned borehole is expected to significantly ease water scarcity in the community and serve as a model for future interventions in the region.
