Government, security forces strategize to combat illegal mining in Nigeria

A technical committee assembled by the Federal Government of Nigeria convened in Abuja on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, to address the pressing issue of illegal mining in the country. The meeting, hosted at the Police Force Headquarters, was convened at the direction of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reform the mining sector and tackle illicit activities within it.

Representatives from various security agencies including the Armed Forces, Police, and NSCDC, as well as officials from the Ministry of Solid Minerals, Environment, and other relevant government bodies, were present at the committee meeting.

The primary objective of the proposed joint task force is to combat illegal mining activities carried out by both foreign entities and Nigerian nationals. The task force aims to bolster security in mining areas, enforce mining regulations, oversee the storage and monitoring of explosives, and promote environmental sustainability in mining operations across the country.

The Nigeria Police Force, alongside other security agencies and government departments, reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s agenda for economic revitalization,
