In a concerted effort to protect public health and promote environmental sustainability, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGSEPA) have kicked off a comprehensive media campaign and public sensitization effort banning open defecation along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.
The campaign, which targets the median from Opic Plaza to Otedola Bridge, aims to curb the spread of communicable diseases and preserve the aesthetics of the newly rehabilitated road.
Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, emphasized the significance of the campaign, stating, “This exercise is crucial in raising awareness and encouraging behavioural change among residents. Open defecation poses serious health risks, particularly during the rainy season, and must be eradicated.”

The initiative was bolstered by the support of the Ogun State government, with Dr. Oluwadare Kehinde, Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Environmental Protection Matters, highlighting the importance of collaboration. “LASEPA’s initiative is commendable, and it sets a strong precedent for how we can work together to tackle common issues,” he said.
Mr. Taiwo Abiodun, representing the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Ojodu Berger Branch, also expressed the union’s commitment to the campaign, urging transporters and commuters to adhere to environmental regulations. “We must all play our part in keeping our environment clean and safe. This campaign is a vital step towards that goal,” he stated.
The campaign features a clean-up exercise on the median, public enlightenment, and interactive sessions with commuters and residents to foster dialogue on environmental issues and empower citizens to take action in their communities.
